ABB to Supply Electrical, Automation Equipment for SSAB Tunnplåt Mill Upgrade
10/07/2008 - SSAB Tunnplåt contracts ABB to supply electrical and automation equipment for a new downcoiler, new exit coil conveyer line, inspection station for coils, a new roller table, and a laminar cooling section at its steel mill in Borlänge, Sweden.
ABB has received two orders from SSAB Tunnplåt to supply electrical and automation equipment for a new downcoiler, a new exit coil conveyer line and inspection station for coils, as well as for a new roller table and laminar cooling section between the finishing mill and downcoilers at SSAB’s steel mill in Borlänge, Sweden. The orders have a combined value of over $18 million.
The hot-rolling mill in Borlänge was originally built in 1961 for a maximum production capacity of 500,000 tonnes per year. Subsequent modernizations over the years have helped enable the plant to increase its annual production to the present 2.8 million tonnes.
ABB’s delivery includes control systems based on System 800xA, as well as drive systems ACS800 including motors and MNS switchgear. ABB is also responsible for engineering, commissioning and erection. Supply of the downcoiler is a repeat order following delivery and commissioning of a similar unit earlier this year.
According to SSAB, the new project is in line with its strategy for the mill’s increased productivity and flexibility, and above all, being able to further develop and roll new types of high-strength steel.
ABB won both orders in a joint consortium with SMS Demag, who is delivering the mechanical machinery for the projects. “SSAB’s choice of ABB and SMS Demag as suppliers, was due to a large extent on previous deliveries and that the customer preferred a repeat order of the downcoiler that was commissioned earlier this year,” says Michael Olofsson, sales pursuit responsible from ABB.
The exit coil conveyer line and inspection station is scheduled to be delivered during the summer of 2010. The downcoiler is to be put in service at the end of 2010, and the roller table/cooling section is to be delivered during the summer of 2011.
