ABB Selected for SSAB Rolling Mill Upgrade
08/28/2024 - ABB has won three related contracts tied to SSAB’s planned improvements of its Borlänge hot rolling mill in Sweden.
According to ABB, the contracts provide for automation, electrification, main stand motors and drives. The work will ensure the mill is able to run efficiently and productively until its planned decommissioning in 2030.
Although SSAB plans to close the mill, it remains a strategic asset as the company executes on its decarbonization plans, ABB said.
“The decision to modernize Borlänge will secure its production stability, drive efficiencies and finance SSAB’s goal of transitioning to fossil-free steel production. Its continued operation is essential to facilitate the construction of a new SEK50 billion fossil-free steel mill in Luleå, Sweden,” ABB said.
SSAB plans to move hot rolling to Luleå.
As part of the project, ABB will upgrade to the switchgear, ensuring continued reliability and efficient 10.5 kV power distribution throughout the hot rolling mill. It also will replace the main drives and motors and upgrade and integrate obsolete control systems into the existing ABB Ability system.
“This collaboration underscores ABB’s unwavering commitment to supporting the steel industry’s transition towards a more sustainable future,” said Martin Björnmalm, ABB Process Industries’ local business line manager for Swedish metals.
“By optimizing operations at Borlänge we are proud to play a part in SSAB’s pioneering efforts to achieve fossil-free steel production.”
