ABB and Hydrogen Optimized Partner to Develop Large-Scale Green Hydrogen Production
09/11/2020 - The two companies have signed a memorandum of understanding to make green hydrogen a viable option.
Hydrogen Optimized plans to use high-current water electrolysis to produce green hydrogen for emerging clean applications. ABB’s hydrogen research team will explore electrical power supply optimization through ABB’s high-power rectifier (HPR) systems.
According to a press release issued by ABB, the companies plan to prove that Hydrogen Optimized’s RuggedCell™ water electrolysis technology can be used to develop an integrated product solution based on a 100-MW single-module plant design.
The memorandum of understanding formalizes the agreement to explore the implementation of a demonstration system as well as the preparation of a 100-MW plant design and commercialization strategies.
“This collaboration advances the commercial availability and feasibility of large-scale green hydrogen systems,” said Charl Marais, global product manager, Process Industries, ABB. “We have been exploring this type of project for more than two years and the synergies with Hydrogen Optimized have been very apparent. We have a clear vision, and the results could be significant.”
Green hydrogen applications include zero-emission transportation fuel supply, chemical production with non-fossil sources of hydrogen and metals production using hydrogen instead of a coking process.
