A New Use for Slag? Dutch Researchers Think They Might Have One.
12/05/2016 - Researchers at a Dutch university are undertaking a four-year research project that will explore whether it’s possible, or even feasible, to use slag as an alternative to cement.
According to Eindhoven University of Technology professor Jos Brouwers, using slag as cement is certainly not outside the realm of possibility – the two materials have similar mineralogical compositions.
Backed by more than €1 million in funding, Brouwers and his team will use the most current tools and methods to study the chemical properties of steel slag and explore how additives may enhance slag’s cement-like qualities. They’ll then take what they learn and apply it to producing new types of slag-based cement and concrete.
If they’re successful, they could wind up creating a market for what’s now a waste product and could potentially reduce emissions of greenhouse gases.
