A Century of Integrated Steelmaking at Welsh Plant Comes to an End
10/01/2024 - Tata Steel on Monday tapped the No. 4 blast furnace at its historic Port Talbot Works in Wales for the final time, bringing to an end nearly 100 years of ironmaking.
“While the closure of our heavy end here in Port Talbot is extremely sad, we must look to the future and the opportunity not only to sustain steelmaking in south Wales, and across the U.K., but to be an early adopter of electric arc furnace steelmaking of flat carbon steels in Europe,” the company said in a statement to the Wales Online newsite.
Tata Steel is closing the plant’s hot end as it moves to convert the facility to electric arc furnace steelmaking.
