Scrap Supplements & Alternative Ironmaking 10
Abstract Submittal
9–11 March 2026 • Drury Plaza Hotel Orlando-Disney Springs Area • Orlando, FL., USA
Since the emergence of scrap-based mini-mills in the 1970s, the industry has continuously sought cost-effective alternatives to scrap — especially for producing higher-grade steels that scrap alone cannot achieve. Direct reduced iron (DRI) remains the leading scrap supplement worldwide and serves as the primary (though not exclusive) alternative to the blast furnace for producing metallic iron, often referred to as alternate iron units (AIU).
For over 30 years, AIST has provided a dedicated forum for producers, consumers, suppliers, and technology developers to exchange insights on past advancements, current best practices, and future trends in scrap supplements and alternative ironmaking.
AIST is now inviting technical presentation abstracts for the 10th Scrap Supplements & Alternative Ironmaking Conference. This event will feature industry experts discussing the latest developments in scrap supplements and ironmaking alternatives.
Topics for technical presentations include, but are not limited to:
- Historical Perspectives: Evolution of AIU technologies and their impact on the industry.
- Trends and Future Outlook: Emerging criteria for AIU development, including product purity standards and decarbonization strategies.
- Process Innovations: Significant advancements in existing AIU production technologies.
- New AIU Approaches: Theoretical studies, lab research, pilot testing and commercialization efforts.
- Reducing Gas Developments: Advances in natural gas, industrial waste gases. and the growing role of green hydrogen in DRI processes.
- Product and Market Evolution: From cold DRI to hot briquetted iron and hot DRI, and expanding AIU applications from electric arc furnaces to blast furnaces.
- Sustainability and Circular Economy: Strategies for waste minimization, recycling and handling of legacy byproducts.
Please submit abstracts through the submission form at AIST.org by 2 September 2025. Written manuscripts are not required, though authors are encouraged to make their presentations available to attendees and distributed by AIST.
Join us as we explore the latest advancements shaping the future of scrap supplements and alternative ironmaking!
