About the International Steel Academy (ISA)

Academy Objectives

The AIST International Steel Academy provides in-depth training focused on the fundamental and practical aspects of steel manufacturing. The unique AIST curriculum is taught by renowned industry experts and provides efficient and affordable access to world class steel education.

The elements within each course are presented such that the steelmaking process will logically unfold as the course progresses. The Steelmaking curriculum (MSTS 201) will begin with the fundamental raw materials of steel and progress through the processing of iron, melting of steel, refining, casting and solidification. Steel Shaping and Treating (MSTS 202) is intended for industry professionals as an introduction to the processing of steel products. The course merges fundamental product specifications, advanced steel metallurgy concepts and principles of state-of-the-art steel processing technologies for flat and long steel products with a focus on the important topics that play an essential role in current steel processing, product development and product application.

Each course contains information on the origin and history of the process, the latest technology used, the equipment needed and the steps necessary to produce a quality product for the next element. Safety awareness, environmental considerations and common maintenance areas are included in each course.

The focus of Advanced Aspects of Advanced High-Strength Steel Production (MSTS 410) is the strength of steel products, more specifically modern high- and ultrahigh-strength steel grades. It will provide a clearer understanding of the theory and fundamental aspects of various strengthening mechanisms used in steel products and translate these fundamentals into useful engineering information.

Target Audience

The curriculum for the AIST International Steel Academy provides a broad and deep understanding of the ironmaking and steelmaking process. Individuals who have experience in the industry and hold a basic understanding of the overall process would find the curriculum of the International Steel Academy beneficial. Process engineers, operations and maintenance personnel, plant management, sales and service engineers and others requiring an expanded knowledge of steel manufacturing fundamentals should attend.
