YTD09 World Steel Production Still Down 21% through June
07/21/2009 - World crude steel production for the 66 countries reporting to the World Steel Association stood at an estimated 99.8 million tonnes in June 2009 — 4.1% above the previous month but still 16% lower than the same month of 2008.
Figures released by the World Steel Association (known formerly as the International Iron and Steel Institute) show that world crude steel production for the 66 countries reporting stood at an estimated 99.83 million tonnes in June 2009 — 4.1% higher than the previous month (June 2009) but still 16.0% lower than June 2008.
While most major regions logged double-digit production losses compared to June 2008, reductions were most severe in North America (-44.0%), Oceania (-40.8%), the EU(27) (-39.4%), South America (-31.3%), and C.I.S. (-27.1%). Exceptions included the Middle East (+3.8%) and Asia (-2.3%).
Compared to the other regions and their largest countries, production in China was higher (+6.0%) vs. June 2008, on a 6.4% increase vs. the previous month (May 2009). China’s June production, at 49,425 tonnes, represents approximately 49.5% of total June world crude steel production. Excluding China’s production, production for the balance of the world fell about 30.2% since June 2008, after increasing about 1.9% vs. the previous month (May 2009).

For the year to date, China’s production has reached 266,583 million tonnes, a 1.2% increase vs. YTD 2008. This compares to double-digit year-on-year YTD losses for all world regions except Asia (-7.8%) and Middle East (+ 0.4%).
Weighing in at 66.1 % of total world production for June 2009, production in Asia stood at 65.98 million tonnes in June, 2.3% lower than in June 2008. Representing 49.5% of world production for June, Chinese production was reported at 49.43 million tonnes in June, a 6.0% increase compared to June 2008, and a 6.4% increase compared to the previous month (May 2009). Japan (-33.6%) and Taiwan (-29.5%) logged the region’s largest percentage decrease vs. June 2008.
For the year to date, Asia reported the production of 360.26 million tonnes of crude steel, a 7.8% decrease vs. YTD 2008.

The twenty-seven countries of the European Union (EU(27)) produced 11.17 million tonnes of crude steel in June, down 39.4% from June 2008. Comparing June 2009 to June 2008, crude steel production fell by 62.7% in Belgium, 54.5% in Romania, 53.0% in Bulgaria, and 50.0% in Sweden. None of the countries in this region recorded an increase over the period. Altogether, the countries in the EU27 contributed 11.3% of the total reported world production in June 2009, compared to 11% the previous month.
For the year to date, EU(27) reported the production of 62.19 million tonnes of crude steel, a 43.2% decrease vs. YTD 2008.
Production in Other Europe totaled 2.45 million tonnes in June, a decrease of 15.1% compared to June 2008. The most significant decreases were recorded in Croatia(-100%) and Serbia(-72.9%). Altogether, these countries contributed 2.4% of the total reported world production in June 2009, virtually unchanged from 2.5% for the previous month.
For the year to date, Other Europe reported the production of 13.18 million tonnes of crude steel, a 21.2% decrease vs. YTD 2008.
Production in the countries of the CIS totaled 7.80 million tonnes in June, reflecting a 27.1% decrease compared to June 2008. Moldova reported the largest decrease (-85.4%) over the period, followed by Ukraine (-36.8%). Altogether, these countries contributed 8.0% of the total reported world production in June 2009, down slightly from 8.2% in the previous month.
For the year to date, CIS reported the production of 44.10 million tonnes of crude steel, a 32.3% decrease vs. YTD 2008.
North American production totaled 6.47 million tonnes in June, a 44.0% decrease in comparison to June 2008. Comparing June 2009 to June 2008, the largest decreases were recorded in Guatemala (-100%), El Salvador (-69.7%), the United States (-46.9%), and Canada (-45.7%). Altogether, the North American countries contributed 6.5% of the total reported world production in June 2009, virtually unchanged from the previous month.
For the year to date, North America reported the production of 35.82 million tonnes of crude steel, a 48.5% decrease vs. YTD 2008.
South American production for June 2009 totaled 2.87 million tonnes, a 31.3% decrease compared to June 2008. The largest percentage decreases took effect in Peru (-53.5%), Uruguay (-38.3%), and Argentina (-36.9%). Altogether, the South American countries contributed 2.9% of the total reported world production in June 2009, virtually unchanged from the previous month.
For the year to date, South America reported the production of 15.90 million tonnes of crude steel, a 35.1% decrease vs. YTD 2008.
Production in Africa totaled 1.2 million tonnes in June 2009, a 15.8% decrease compared to June 2008. Comparing June 2009 to June 2008, the largest percentage decreases were recorded in Algeria (-61.0%) and South Africa (-19.0%). The African countries contributed 1.2% of the total reported world production in June 2009, a slight decrease from 1.3% in the previous month.

Production in the Middle East totaled 1.43 million tonnes in June 2009, a 3.8% increase compared to June 2008. Comparing June 2009 to June 2008, the largest percentage decreases were recorded in Qatar (-39.0%). Altogether, the countries of the Middle East contributed 1.4% of the total reported world production in June 2009, down from 1.7% in the previous month.
For the year to date, the Middle East reported the production of 8.38 million tonnes of crude steel, a 0.4% increase vs. YTD 2008.
Production in Oceania totaled 0.43 million tonnes in June 2009, a 40.8% decrease compared to June 2008. Altogether, the countries of Oceania contributed 0.4% of the total reported world production in June 2009, virtually unchanged from the previous month.
For the year to date, Oceania reported the production of 2.30 million tonnes of crude steel, a 47.7% decrease vs. YTD 2008.
