YTD Stainless Imports up More than 70% through July 2010

Total stainless steel imports reached 352,762 tons in YTD July 2010, a 70.5% increase compared to the comparable year-ago period according to the latest report from the Specialty Steel Industry of North America (SSINA).
 
Total specialty steel imports (comprising stainless steel, alloy tool steel and electrical steel) reached 448,498 tons through the same period, a 63.1% increase compared to the comparable year-ago period.
 
Data included in the SSINA report reflect U.S. consumption, imports, and import penetration for YTD July 2010 compared to the same 2009 seven-month period for major specialty steel product lines, as well as for total stainless steel and total specialty steel.
 
Stainless steel sheet/strip YTD July 2010 imports were 210,515 tons, an 84.0% increase compared to YTD July 2009. U.S. consumption was 716,567 tons through the same period, a 44.2% increase, while seven-month import penetration was 29.4%, a 6.4 percentage point increase from 2009.
 
Stainless steel plate YTD July 2010 imports were 45,026 tons, a 107.1% increase compared to YTD July 2009. U.S. consumption was 132,441 tons through the same period, a 35.8% increase, while seven-month import penetration was 34.0%, an 11.7 percentage point increase from 2009.
 
Stainless steel bar YTD July 2010 imports were 58,597 tons, a 26.1% increase compared to YTD July 2009. U.S. consumption was 120,575 tons through the same period, a 35.2% increase, while seven-month import penetration was 48.6%, a 3.5 percentage point decrease from 2009.
 
Stainless steel rod YTD July 2010 imports were 13,667 tons, a 91.5% increase compared to YTD July 2009. U.S. consumption was 35,792 tons through the same period, a 106.1% increase, while seven-month import penetration was 38.2%, a 2.9 percentage point decrease from 2009.
 
Stainless steel wire YTD July 2010 imports were 24,957 tons, a 45.4% increase compared to YTD July 2009. U.S. consumption was 27,699 tons through the same period, a 13.6% increase, while seven-month import penetration was 90.1%, a 19.7 percentage point increase from 2009.
 
Through YTD June 2010, imports total stainless steel (comprising the foregoing product lines) were 352,762 tons, a 70.5% increase compared to YTD July 2009. U.S. consumption was 1,033,074 tons through the same period, a 42.4% increase, while seven-month import penetration was 34.1%, a 5.6 percentage point increase from 2009.
 
Alloy tool steel YTD July 2010 imports were 43,052 tons, a 91.6% increase compared to YTD July 2009. U.S. consumption and import penetration were not calculable.
 
Electrical steel YTD July 2010 imports were 52,684 tons, a 15.5% increase compared to YTD July 2009. U.S. consumption was 114,298 tons through the same period, a 12.9% decrease from YTD July 2009, while seven-month import penetration was 46.1%, an 11.3 percentage point increase from 2009.
 
Imports of total specialty steel (comprising stainless steel, alloy tool steel and electrical steel) were 448,498 tons, a 63.1% increase compared to YTD July 2009. U.S. consumption was 1,174,470 tons through the same period, a 34.7% increase, while seven-month import penetration was 38.2%, a 6.7 percentage point increase from 2009.
