04/09/2010 - Negotiating teams for USW Local 8782 and U.S. Steel Canada's Lake Erie Works facility reach a tentative agreement that could bring an end to the lock-out that has been ongoing since last August.
Negotiating teams for United Steelworkers Local 8782 and U.S. Steel Canada's Lake Erie Works facility in Nanticoke have reached a tentative agreement that could bring an end to the lock-out that has been ongoing since last August.
According to the USW, Lake Erie Works employees were locked out by US Steel beginning on August 3, 2009. They said the lockout followed the layoff of about 800 workers from the same facility in March 2009.
USW Local 8782 President Bill Ferguson said that details of the tentative agreement will not be disclosed until they are presented to union members, which is scheduled to take place at a meeting Monday, April 12. According to a USW press release, the presentation will be followed by a 48-hour cooling-off period before the ratification vote is held next Thursday, April 15.
Meanwhile, the federal government continues its court case against U.S. Steel, alleging the company violated production and employment commitments made under the Investment Canada Act when it purchased the former Stelco operations in Canada.
