U. S. Steel Receives Final Approval for Minntac Expansion

The taconite mine extension project received the necessary state permits earlier this year.

"We are very thankful for the support of our congressional delegation — Senators Klobuchar and Franken and Congressman Nolan — in assisting Minntac with the permits," said Larry Sutherland, general manager of Minnesota Ore Operations regarding the support received throughout the permitting process.  "We are pleased to have the final permits in hand and begin work on the expansion."

As a result of the extension, Minntac will be expanded by 483 acres, extending the life of the mine by 16 years and ensuring the long-term competitiveness of the facility. Approximately 100 jobs have been created as a result of the project.
