Dec. 7, 2006 — United States Steel Corp. Chairman and CEO John P. Surma announced that Dan D. Sandman, U. S. Steel's Vice Chairman and Chief Legal & Administrative Officer and General Counsel, has elected to retire in February 2007. Mr. Sandman will also retire from the company's board of directors.

"Dan has made outstanding contributions to United States Steel Corp. and its predecessor companies," Surma said. "While we accept the news of his retirement as General Counsel with regret, we know that he will continue to add value to this community and we wish him well in his continuing endeavors.

"He has built a very capable team that will serve us well as we move forward," Surma added. "The legal team, for example, fosters a culture of excellence and teamwork. Dan has worked hard to see that we are on the leading edge of good corporate governance, and he has exemplified the role of a thoughtful and deliberate counsel for our board. In all of his endeavors throughout his many years of service with our company, Dan has served with honor and integrity."

Sandman, 58, a native of Cincinnati, Ohio, graduated from Ohio State University with a bachelor of arts degree in 1970, and a law degree in 1973, both conferred Cum Laude. He was elected to Phi Beta Kappa in 1971, and in 1989, he participated in the Stanford Executive Program.

In 1973, Sandman joined Marathon Oil Co. (which was acquired by U. S. Steel in 1982) and served in a series of positions in the marketing, antitrust, real estate and oil and gas law areas in London, Houston and Findlay, Ohio. In 1986, he was elected General Counsel and Secretary of Marathon. In 1992, he was elected Secretary and Assistant General Counsel of the former USX Corp. in Pittsburgh, and in 1993, he was elected General Counsel and Secretary of USX. He assumed his current position and was elected to the United States Steel Corp. Board of Directors in January 2002, after it was spun off from USX.

Sandman is a member of the American, Pennsylvania and Ohio Bar Associations. He is Chairman of the Board of the Senator John Heinz Pittsburgh Regional History Center and Chairman of the Ohio State College of Law's National Council. He also serves on the boards of the Carnegie Science Center, the Pittsburgh Regional Alliance and the Carnegie Hero Fund Commission. He has been an active supporter of United Way and is a member of the De Tocqueville Society. In 2005, he was appointed co-chair of the Pennsylvania Corporate Counsel Roundtable by Chief Justice Ralph J. Cappy.

Steel has domestic annual raw steel production capability of 19.4 million net tons and Central European annual raw steel production capability of 7.4 million tonnes. U. S. Steel is also engaged in several other business activities including the production of iron ore pellets and coke; transportation services (railroad and barge operations); and real estate operations.
