U. S. Steel Announces Vice President-Tubular Operations

United States Steel Corp. announced the appointment of Douglas R. Matthews as Vice President—Tubular Operations and President of the company's U. S. Steel Tubular Products, Inc. subsidiary effective immediately.

Matthews (43) succeeds Joseph Alvarado, whose retirement was recently announced. He will have executive responsibility for the company's tubular operations and associated functions. He will lead U. S. Steel Tubular Products, the largest tubular products manufacturer in North America, with a total annual capacity of approximately 2.8 million net tons.

In his new position, Matthews will report to Executive Vice President and Chief Operating Officer John H. Goodish, operating from the company's corporate headquarters in Pittsburgh.

"Doug's strong leadership skills and broad operations background will aid our overall efforts to ensure that U. S. Steel Tubular Products is the supplier of choice for seamless, welded and specialty tubular products and services to customers in the energy industry," said Goodish.

Matthews joined U. S. Steel in 1988 as a management associate at Mon Valley Works' Edgar Thomson Plant, subsequently progressing through increasingly responsible roles in electrical and caster maintenance at the Edgar Thomson Plant and coating operations at Mon Valley Works' Irvin Plant. In 1997, he transferred to Pro-Tec Coating Co. to manage installation and commissioning of the facility's second continuous galvanizing line.

Matthews oversaw iron production at the former USS/KOBE steelmaking venture in Lorain, Ohio, and then at Gary Works in Gary, Ind. (1998 to 2003). He was subsequently named to a series of progressively responsible positions including Division Manager of Steelmaking and Casting at Gary Works (2003); General Manager-blast furnace engineering and technology at the company's Pittsburgh headquarters (2005); and Vice President and General Director of U. S. Steel Serbia, d.o.o. (2006) with responsibility for overseeing all activities at facilities in three Serbian cities.

In October 2007, Matthews assumed his most recent position, President and General Manager of U. S. Steel Canada when U. S. Steel completed its acquisition of Canadian steelmaker Stelco Inc. In that role, he was responsible for overseeing operations at the company's Canadian subsidiary, which includes two steelmaking and finishing facilities in southern Ontario.

Matthews graduated from Pennsylvania State University in 1987 with a bachelor's degree in electrical engineering and received a master's degree in business administration from Duquesne University in 1993.
