Trump Nominates U.S. Trade Representative

Retired Nucor Corp. chief executive Dan DiMicco, who has been advising Donald Trump and assisting the President-elect’s transition, was passed over for the job as U.S. trade representative, but said the nominee, former Reagan administration official Robert Lighthizer, is a good choice.

DiMicco told the McClatchy newspapers that Lighthizer is “a longtime partner in the trade battles and friend.” He called him “a smart choice” for trade representative.

“I chose him to be on the USTR transition team just for this reason,” DiMicco said.

Philip K. Bell, president of the Steel Manufacturers Association, also applauded the decision.

"Mr. Lighthizer has a track record of success both in the government and in the private sector, as well as a firm understanding of the impact of trade policies on U.S. manufacturers,” Bell said in a statement.

“When combined with the selection of Peter Navarro to head the White House National Trade Council, the (Steel Manufacturers Association) is increasingly optimistic that the Trump administration is serious about addressing the unfair trade practices of some of our trading partners."
