Tosyalı to Build World’s Largest DRI Plant in Libya

In a press release, the company said the new plant will be a joint venture between Tosyalı and Libya United Steel Company for Iron and Steel Industry (SULB). The Tosyalı-SULB plant will feature MIDREX Flexi DRI technology and boast an annual capacity of 8.1 million metric tons, making it the largest DRI plant in the world. The plant will be equipped to operate using hydrogen for green ironmaking production.

The company said the DRI plant will eventually supply hot briquetted iron (HBI) for a planned 2.7 million metric ton integrated iron and steel complex, in addition to shipping to the surrounding region and Europe. Once the plant is complete, Tosyalı will be the largest supplier of HBI in the international market, the company said.

Tosyalı chairman Fuat Tosyalı said that the companies have completed preliminary ground investigation and engineering at the site, and construction will begin shortly.

“I firmly believe we will pioneer transforming the Libyan steel industry into an ecosystem that meets world steel industry needs by producing high-standard, high-quality green steel products with low carbon emissions, utilizing advanced technology, innovation, and R&D in the integrated facility we will establish,” Tosyalı said.
