ThyssenKrupp Awards Site Exploration Contract

ThyssenKrupp Steel and Stainless USA, LLC announced that it has awarded a contract to Thompson Engineering, Inc. of Mobile, Ala., to conduct geotechnical site testing for its $3.7-billion steel and stainless steel processing facility planned for Calvert, Ala.

ThyssenKrupp’s new steel/stainless steel facility will have an annual capacity of 4.5 million tonnes of end products.

It will include a hot strip mill that will be used primarily to process slabs from the company’snew steel mill in Brazil. It will also include a stainless steel meltshop with an annual first-phase capacity of up to one million tonnes of slabs, which will be also processed on the hot strip mill.

The new U.S. plant will also feature cold rolling and hot-dip coating capacity for high-quality end products of flat carbon steel.

The cold rolling facility will be designed initially to produce 325,000 tonnes of cold strip and 100,000 tonnes of pickled hot strip.

The new plant complex is expected to begin operations in 2010. It is considered to be one of the largest private industrial development projects in the United States over the next decade.
Thompson Engineering will conduct soil tests on the future site of the facility and the marine terminal where barges will be loaded and unloaded for travel on the Tombigbee River. As part of the contract, Thompson Engineering will drill 148 soil test borings on the facility site and 26 soil test borings in the marine terminal area to depths ranging from 20 to 150 feet. The tests will help determine the number and types of foundation systems required for the facility and terminal. Thompson Engineering’s testing will begin in July.

“We’re very excited to announce that this first contract was awarded to an Alabama-based company,” said Bob Soulliere, CEO of ThyssenKrupp Steel USA, LLC. “We are committed to using local contractors and suppliers to the extent possible.”

Uli Albrecht-Frueh, CEO of ThyssenKrupp Stainless USA, LLC, added, “The tests that will be conducted over the coming months will allow us to construct our state-of-the-art facility at the high standards that we insist upon. We are confident that Thompson Engineering is the right firm to lead this work.”

ThyssenKrupp’s new plant complex, which will process carbon steel and stainless steel for high-value applications, is scheduled to begin operations in 2010. Construction is expected to begin by the end of this year.
