AIST Hutton Memorial Scholarship

About

Leland Hutton, born in 1918, first served in the U.S. Navy in the Panama Canal welding platoons. Despite receiving only a sixth-grade formal education, he went on to establish Hutton Steel Engineering Enterprises, a steelmaking equipment fabricator and manufacturer, in Twinsburg, Ohio, USA, in 1947. Hutton was the holder of eight patents, including one for oxygen lance tips. He was a 15-year member of AIST. He passed away in January of 2008.

Ronald Hutton, born in 1951 in Cleveland, Ohio, USA and attended West Virginia University and Kent State University. He served in the U.S. Army and later joined his father’s business, Hutton Steel Engineering Enterprises, as a fabricating manager. As an ASME and AWS Code Certified Welder, Hutton was responsible for the sophisticated welding of copper to steel for Hutton Steel Engineering’s top product, oxygen lance tips. He passed away in March of 2016.

Objective

The Hutton Memorial Scholarship is a one-time, single-year award donated by the Hutton family. The scholarship commemorates the lives of Leland Hutton and his son, Ronald Hutton, who devoted their professional careers to the steel industry.
