2024 Steel Intern Scholarships

Samuel M. King

My name is Sam King, and I am a senior chemical engineering major at Rose-Hulman Institute of Technology. This summer, I had the opportunity to intern at Steel Dynamics Inc. – Flat Roll Group Butler Division in Butler, Ind., USA. I worked as a metallurgical intern in their cold mill under their product and process metallurgists.

One of the projects that I worked on was a study of the gauge of our coils coming off our galvanizing lines. This helped to improve the quality and consistency of the coils coming off the line, both for customers and for other operating lines.

I also worked to install brand new equipment that can be used to observe the microstructure of our steel. I was able to observe the microstructure of many of our steel products which helped me to better understand our processes and their effects on steel.

During this internship, I gained knowledge that helped me work more effectively with operators and better understand the steel making process. I would like to thank SDI and AIST for this opportunity to grow my knowledge and advance my career.
