2024 Steel Intern Scholarships

Raili A.L. Kary

This summer, I had the privilege of interning with the Environmental Control Department at Algoma Inc. As a materials science engineering student, this was a unique opportunity that allowed me to integrate academic theories with real-world applications and has significantly shaped my career aspirations.

My role at Algoma was both diverse and enriching. I collaborated closely with environmental control officers across several critical sectors, including waste management, water management and emissions management. Each sector presented unique challenges and learning opportunities. I gained hands-on experience with the processes and strategies involved in managing industrial waste. Understanding how different types of waste are handled and repurposed provided me with a practical perspective on waste reduction and resource recovery. I was also involved in monitoring effluent from our steelmaking processes. Observing and analyzing how effluent is treated and controlled offered deep insights into maintaining environmental compliance and minimizing water pollution. Additionally, shadowing an air emissions environmental officer was invaluable in understanding the technologies and techniques used to reduce and monitor emissions.

Another highlight of my internship was the opportunity to begin research into steelmaking waste recycling. This research aimed to explore innovative methods for repurposing steelmaking byproducts, a crucial aspect of advancing sustainability in the industry. Engaging in this research not only enhanced my technical skills but also reinforced my interest in contributing to sustainable practices within materials science.

One of the most dynamic aspects of the internship was witnessing the team’s response to environmental emergencies and critical situations. Observing how the team managed urgent issues and implemented quick, effective solutions provided me with a firsthand look at the importance of agility and teamwork in environmental management. These experiences underscored the significance of preparedness and adaptability in maintaining environmental safety and compliance.

My time at Algoma provided me with a deep understanding of the environmental challenges and solutions in the steel industry. I am grateful for the team I worked with, who ensured that I had comprehensive exposure to various aspects of the steel works and made me feel like a valuable team member. The opportunity to engage in meaningful research with the purpose of advancing sustainability in the industry has sparked my interest in pursuing a career dedicated to advancing materials reprocessing solutions and environmental sustainability. As I continue my studies and career, the lessons learned and experiences gained at Algoma will undoubtedly guide and influence my path forward.
