2024 Steel Intern Scholarships - Ronald E. Lincoln
Nolan J.M. Clark
This past summer, I had the exciting opportunity to work at Arcelormittal Dofasco G.P. for a 4-month co-op as a part of the AIST Steel Intern Scholarship. I worked as relief support in the No. 4 blast furnace, and through my time at Arcelormittal Dofasco G.P. I was able to obtain a firsthand appreciation for the steelmaking process, and the essential process that is ironmaking.
While my position was mainly to help support operations, colleagues and leadership were actively engaging me in understanding more about the steelmaking process, such as touring the casting floor, answering questions, and giving high-level overview on how our business unit takes raw materials and turns them into usable inputs for the steelmaking process, well beyond what my job required.
During my time at Dofasco, I had the pleasure of working with colleagues who not only took the time and effort to make sure that I was trained until I was comfortable working independently, but also fostered a culture that places a great importance on personal health and safety, going above and beyond to provide me with all of the personal protective equipment (PPE) and instruction I needed to feel safe at work.
Dofasco has definitely left me with a great interest in the steelmaking process and industry as a whole, an interest that will help to guide me to a meaningful and impactful career in the future.
I would like to thank AIST and Arcelormittal Dofasco G.P. for providing me with this incredible opportunity. I am very thankful for the support I received, and I look forward to more fantastic learning experiences like this.
