AIST Steel Intern Scholarship

In the summer of 2023, I was a part of the hot mill processes team on the production line at Churubusco, Monterrey, N.L., Mexico, under the guidance of Israel Arcos.
For two months, alongside my mentor, the process director Efrain Ubici, I worked on a project to explore the limits of the hot mill’s capacity chart, upon which the dimensions of all manufactured steel rolls are based. The rolls were destined for purposes such as automotive, construction and appliances; therefore, it’s of utmost importance to understand the dimensions that can be rolled to provide more and better products. I was also responsible for promptly updating the team about the quality of each rolled coil, informing them about materials to be rolled in different dimensions than usual, sending statistical quality indicators of the weekly production, and participating in various meetings with different areas of the production line; this gave me the opportunity to meet more and different people.
It was an extremely rewarding experience to learn new things from all the people who accompanied me throughout the process. With their support, I was able to face the daily challenges presented by the industry and I am left with the love for the steel industry.
