Madeleine Jennings - 2017 Steel Intern Scholar
I would like to extend my deepest gratitude to AIST for selecting me as a 2017 Steel Intern scholar. I am continuously impressed by this organization’s generosity to students interested in steelmaking, and their determination to recruit as much young talent into our industry as possible.
I completed my third internship with Commercial Metals Company (CMC) – Texas this summer. Because I have become more familiar with CMC’s operation, I completed more complicated quality, safety and process improvement trials. Most notably, I oversaw the redesigning the tundish to mold shrouds for improved cleanliness, assisting in developing a carbon boil practice, and developing a confined space rescue system for the ladle rebuilding station.
I am increasingly certain that I will pursue a career within the steel industry. I am debating between obtaining a master’s degree in metallurgical engineering to pursue a position in quality improvement or going straight into the workforce as a meltshop process engineer after my graduation in December 2018.
Lastly, I would like to extend a special thank you to CMC for supporting my passion for steelmaking. It has been such a wonderful experience spending my summers working at the Texas plant, and I look forward to utilizing what I have learned during my time with the company in my career as a steelmaker.
