John Hunt - 2018 Steel Intern Scholar

This summer I had the opportunity to work for Nucor Steel Tuscaloosa Inc. as a metallurgical engineering intern. This summer was my third semester as a co-op with Nucor. I primarily worked on projects in the meltshop. These projects were based around improving the steelmaking process at Nucor Tuscaloosa. I enjoyed being able to work hands-on in the production environment and get to know so many of my teammates. It was challenging at first figuring out how to complete different tasks, but as time went on, I gained a level of confidence with my teammates at Nucor that I did not have prior to starting my internship. Working as an intern for Nucor has provided me with a plethora of real-life applications of the topics covered in my classes at the University of Alabama. Being able to see abstract concepts from the classroom in use in the steel industry greatly improved my understanding of metallurgy. After graduation, I hope to get a job as a metallurgist in the steel industry.  My internship with Nucor has helped me to better understand the things I want in a job as I prepare to begin my career.
