AIST Steel Intern Scholarship
Jesus Campuzano Chamonica
I completed my internship at Ternium México, Apodaca, N.L., Mexico. Ternium has several plants distributed around Mexico, each one with different purposes, ranging from the extraction of iron ore to the production of finished products. During my summer internship, I worked at the Largos Norte plant, which produces construction rebar. During my internship, I worked with the team from the roller workshop, in order to improve the rolling process in general.
Throughout the summer, my internship included four main projects. The first was working on improving the cooling system of the slitting pass (stand 14). This required a redesign of the cooling system redirecting the flow of water to the most critical areas of the roller that presented thermal fatigue. The next project I had was to change of roller material in twisting rolls. The twisting rolls of stand 15 presented a problem of excessive wear, because of which it was decided to change their material. Two steels were suggested, H24 and M2. The third project I worked on was the laminator roll control for 3/8”. The purpose of this project was to eliminate orphan rolls by making new pairs. New couples were made, thus putting stand 14 rolls to work that were stopped in the roller workshop. Finally, the last project I worked on was control measurements on roller journals where hardness was measured in rolling mill journals, finding that these presented greater hardness on the driving side than on the free side.
It was a very gratifying experience to be able to complete all of my projects this summer with my advisor, the people who work in the roller workshop and lamination mill, and without a doubt I learned a lot. Finally, I would like to thank AIST and Ternium México for the opportunity they gave me.
