AIST Steel Intern Scholarship
Gaylan B. Beasley
I first found my interest in the metalcasting industry from my amazing professors Dr. JingJing Qing and Dr. Mingzhi Xu. I was fortunate to obtain a position as a metallurgical intern at Charlote Pipe and Foundry with their help and with the assistance of AIST. Since working at Charlote Pipe, I have learned so much and have gained skills that I can apply in my future career.
During my time at Charlote Pipe, I worked on a series of projects to improve the castings shipped out to customers. My internship consisted of designing gating systems for castings, simulating our models in NovaFlow Simulations, trialing the designs, and more. With this experience, I have learned how to work with other departments within the Foundry to produce outstanding castings.
While interning, I also had the pleasure of attending American Foundry Society’s Gating and Riser Design 101 class and gained even more knowledge on what it takes to make a great gating system. I went through training in a variety of different departments here to see how each department contributes to the success of running the foundry.
All in all, I want to thank Charlote Pipe and AIST for the opportunity to expand my knowledge within the metalcasting industry and for allowing me to get hands on experience working in a foundry.
