Garret H. Finnen - 2017 Steel Intern Scholar
I would like to start off by thanking AIST for selecting me as a recipient for this scholarship for the second year. The financial support I have received from AIST is tremendous and I will always be grateful for all the opportunities and experiences that would not have been possible without this support. In addition to the funding I have received from AIST, I am also thankful for the experiences Nucor Steel has given me over the past few years. My internship experience this summer was my seventh internship with Nucor Steel and the third mill I have had the opportunity to work with. The incredible culture and opportunities that Nucor has provided for me are the reason I have continued to work with them each year. This summer, I was given the incredible opportunity to work at Nucor Steel-Decatur LLC in Decatur, Ala., USA. I was assigned to work at the caster where I was given multiple projects that revolved around clean steel practices and improving the quality of the steel to meet customers’ needs. I could not have asked for a better team to work with. The teammates I worked with this summer made sure my safety was always the number one priority while assisting me with my projects. They gave me an experience that went above and beyond my expectations. Working at a steel mill gives me the opportunity to work closely with my projects and get hands-on experience. This is something that is very rare when pursuing a career and that is why I hope to have a career in the steel industry upon graduation in May 2018. Again, I would like to thank AIST and Nucor for the support and opportunities I have received over the past few years. They are the reason I could continue my education and develop a career that I am eager to pursue.
