AIST Steel Intern Scholarship
Gabriel Magana-Rendon
This summer I experienced firsthand what the steel industry is, and I think it is for sure one of the most incredible places to work. During my internship, I learned a lot every single day and it’s a perfect industry for those who love to learn. I acquired knowledge about how the processes of cold rolling, annealing, tempering and tension leveling lines work.
I was in the cold rolling and finishing lines at the Ternium México, Churubusco, N.L., Mexico, and under the supervision of Heriberto Torres Quiroga I worked in a couple of projects and activities.
The main project I was working on was the control implementation of an elevator that would improve the times related to the transportation of steel rolls between industrial units. I also had the opportunity to learn about security with a project focused on the installation of security shut-off valves and had the experience of being in the weekly security meetings of the plant.
Due to the projects mentioned before, I learned about project management and material acquisition, and I acquired knowledge about quality indicators and the use of the management system. Thanks to this internship I was able to meet a lot of people who love the steel industry and their jobs, making me get more and more interested and fascinated with this industry.
I have no words about how amazing this experience was and all I can say is thanks to Ternium México and AIST for bringing me this opportunity and I am so grateful with every single person I worked with during my internship because I learned so much from them about the lines, processes and steel industry.
