AIST Steel Intern Scholarship
Elijah J. Mangone
I was blessed to have an internship with Nucor Steel–Decatur LLC, Decatur in Ala., USA, for the summer. I worked at the caster in the hot mill as a process engineering intern. In this role, I worked with the meltshop process engineers, melt/cast metallurgist, and day supervisors on long term projects as well as daily projects as they came up. My summer projects included several safety related projects, production projects and group projects with other interns.
This was my third internship with Nucor Steel–Decatur LLC and I continued to learn a lot about casting at the Decatur sheet mill. I was able to get hands on learning by getting out on the production floor each day and to see the outcome of the projects I was heading. Along with the planning, I was encouraged to lead the fabrication of my projects, where I worked with the mechanical and electrical teams at the caster. I also did data analysis projects to find causes of production problems and slab imperfections.
Besides my projects, I also attended daily toolbox meetings where we started each day with safety and production updates. I also attended weekly clean steel meetings, where I would present project updates and results to the team members.
Since I am going into my senior year at Missouri University of Science and Technology, I was job hunting throughout the summer. I attended the Nucor Senior Summit in Chicago Ill., USA, where I was able to interview with multiple Nucor plants across the country. I was fortunate enough to get a job offer at Nucor Steel West Virgina after I graduate in May.
I would like to say thank you to all of Nucor Corp. for investing so much in me over the last three years and to AIST for assisting me in making a dream come true as I finish my degree in metallurgical engineering.
