AIST Steel Intern Scholarship
Camden J. Holloway
This summer I have had the pleasure of working at SSAB Special Steels, Mobile, Ala., USA, this time at the Mobile facility. I’ve been fortunate to have been able to work in the primary and rolling mill departments. The metallurgists I have worked with have been extremely knowledgeable and were very quick to take me under their wing to teach me everything they could. At the beginning of my internship, we spent a lot of time going over the different steelmaking processes. I have gained a fundamental understanding of electric arc furnace (EAF), ladle metallurgical furnace (LMF), vacuum degasser (VTD), continuous casting, reheat furnace, steckel mill (hot rolling), levelers, and flying shears. I was also shown how to use the MS query system to be able pull and filter data from every process from the mill. I was able to help with defect investigations by providing detailed data tables and graphs for various processes. I was able to sharpen my excel skills by building some calculators and excel macros to increase workflow for my mentors. I have been able to shadow the pulpits and learn from the operators about the specifics of the equipment. I have also been fortunate enough to be able to continue to help work on my research project that I conducted with SSAB Research & Development (R&D) last year.
It was a highly beneficial experience, and I was able to accomplish and learn a lot this summer. I’ve made some new friends, worked with some incredible people, and gained so much important knowledge that will be so beneficial to my professional development. Thank you SSAB.
