2024 Steel Intern Scholarships

Adolfo Tapia Tovar

During summer 2024, I had the opportunity to intern at Nucor-JFE Steel Mexico, a leading company in the steel industry. This experience not only allowed me to apply the knowledge I acquired in my studies but also provided me with a deep understanding of how a large company operates in such a crucial sector.

From the very first day, I immersed myself in the dynamic environment of the steel plant. The experience began with comprehensive orientation focused on production processes, safety standards and the organizational structure of the company. I was impressed by the scale of the operations and the complexity of the equipment involved in steel manufacturing.

My main responsibility was to improve the surface inspection system and collaborate with the quality department to drive continuous improvement. I worked closely with the quality department, the electronic maintenance team, the IT team, and the metallurgy department, which allowed me to learn from experienced professionals and gain a better understanding of the challenges and opportunities in the steel industry.

One of the most notable projects I participated in was the development of a classifier for a specific type of defect, aimed at providing the inspector with a better perspective for decision-making. This project not only allowed me to apply my analytical skills but also taught me the importance of collaboration and effective communication in an industrial environment.

In addition to technical tasks, I participated in team meetings and presentations, which helped me develop communication skills and learn how to present ideas and results clearly and concisely. This experience offered me valuable insight into the importance of coordination and effective management for the success of a project.

A particularly rewarding aspect of my internship was the opportunity to learn about sustainability and environmental practices in the steel industry. I participated in initiatives related to waste reduction and energy efficiency improvement, which allowed me to appreciate the company's commitment to responsible and sustainable practices.

In summary, my summer internship at Nucor-JFE Steel Mexico was an incredibly enriching experience. I not only gained technical knowledge and practical skills but also developed a deeper appreciation for the steel industry and its challenges. I am grateful for the opportunity and for the support of the entire team, and I am confident that this experience will be of great value in my future professional career.
