Richard A. Cammisa - 2016 Steel Intern Scholar
The AIST Steel Intern Scholarship provided me with my third summer interning at AK Steel Corp. This summer, I was at their Research Center, working with stainless and electrical steel. Over the course of the summer, I was able to see a stainless steel coatings project develop from performing lab trials through a plant trial conducted at Butler Works during my final week at the internship. I am looking forward to seeing how the trial turns out in the coming weeks as the material is still going through processing. One of my favorite things about working at the Research Center was the collaboration that was encouraged. I worked with and gained invaluable knowledge from so many different people, and I am very appreciative of their willingness to work with me. I also was able to work closely with other interns, and coming out of the internship we have become good friends. I was asked to come back over my winter break this year to continue to do research on the coatings project that I had worked on, and I am excited to see where it can lead.

This scholarship has not only exposed me to numerous opportunities to expand my network and grow my knowledge of steelmaking and what it takes to be competitive in the metals industry, but it has also helped me financially. I am entering my senior year of undergraduate work at Mercyhurst University, and having this support really helps alleviate the stresses of paying for school. This experience has helped me confirm that I want to continue my career in the steel industry, and I would like to give thanks to both AIST and AK Steel for this opportunity!
