Steel Shipments Slip 3.9% in August
10/17/2008 - U.S. steel mills shipped 8,860,000 net tons for the month of August 2008, a 3.9% decrease from the 9,209,000 net tons shipped in August 2007, according to the latest report from AISI.
U.S. steel mills shipped 8,860,000 net tons for the month of August 2008, according to the latest report from the American Iron and Steel Institute (AISI).
The report, which is based on the latest U.S. Census Bureau data, shows that total shipments represented a 3.9% decrease from the 9,209,000 net tons shipped in August 2007, and a 3.6% decrease from the 9,175,000 net tons shipped in the previous month, July 2008.
A year-to-year comparison of year-to-date shipments shows the following changes within major market classifications:
- Service centers and distributors, + 6.0%
- Automotive, - 4.6%
- Construction and contractors’ products, - 2.4%
- Oil and gas, + 5.5%
AISI serves as the voice of the North American steel industry in the public policy arena and advances the case for steel in the marketplace as the preferred material of choice.
