Steel Shipments Increase 6.3% in April versus Last Year

U.S. steel mills shipped 9,403,000 net tons in the month of April 2008, according to the latest report from the American Iron and Steel Institute (AISI).
The April total reflects a 6.3% increase from the 8,849,000 net tons shipped in April 2007 and a 2.7% increase from the 9,158,000 net tons shipped in the previous month, March 2008.
A year-to-year comparison of year-to-date shipments shows the following changes within major market classifications:
- Service centers and distributors, + 4.4%
- Automotive, - 2.2%
- Construction and contractors’ products, - 2.9%
- Oil and gas, + 7.4%
AISI serves as the voice of the North American steel industry in the public policy arena and advances the case for steel in the marketplace as the preferred material of choice.
