Steel Shipments Dip 1.9% in March versus Last Year

U.S. steel mills shipped 9,158,000 net tons for the month of March 2008, according to the latest report from the American Iron and Steel Institute (AISI).
 
The March total reflects a 1.9% decrease from the 9,331,000 net tons shipped in March 2007, and a 0.2% decrease from the 9,174,000 net tons shipped in the previous month, February 2008.
 
A year-to-year comparison of year-to-date shipments shows the following changes within major market classifications:
 
  • Service centers and distributors, + 4.1%
  • Automotive, - 1.2%
  • Construction and contractors’ products, - 1.2%
  • Oil and gas, + 8.8%
