Steel Industry Remembers Senator Byrd

“Senator Byrd fought hard for the steel companies not only in West Virginia, but nationwide,” said AISI President and CEO Thomas J. Gibson, in a published statement.

“Among other things, Senator Byrd took a leading role in the area of U.S. trade law enforcement against dumped and subsidized imports.  Among his many efforts in support of strong U.S. laws against unfair trade was his lead sponsorship of a provision, which became known as the “Byrd Amendment,” to address situations where foreign producers continue to engage in unfair trading -- even after the imposition of antidumping and countervailing duties.

Gibson noted that Byrd was “an important voice for American manufacturing and will always be remembered as a friend of the steel industry.

“On behalf of AISI and our members, we extend our thoughts and prayers to his family,” concluded Gibson.
