Steel Industry Executives Achieve LEED AP Accreditation
08/12/2009 - AISI reports that Helen Chen, Manager of Construction Standards Development, and Jonathan Humble, Regional Director-Construction Codes and Standards, achieved LEED AP accreditation in the specialty of Building Design + Construction.
The American Iron and Steel Institute (AISI) announced that Helen Chen, Manager of Construction Standards Development, and Jonathan Humble, Regional Director-Construction Codes and Standards, have achieved LEED Accredited Professional (AP) accreditation in the specialty of Building Design + Construction. Accreditation in LEED — which stands for Leadership in Energy and Environmental Design — is managed by the Green Building Certification Institute (GBCI), and demonstrates knowledge of the LEED Green Building rating system.
The LEED AP Building Design + Construction specialty demonstrates an individual’s expertise in the principles and requirements of “green” design, construction and operation of buildings and structures. The accreditation also demonstrates an individual’s knowledge and skills that are necessary to assist others (such as building owners, design professionals, and contractors) in the LEED certification process.
“We congratulate Helen and Jonathan on adding LEED AP accreditation to their professional accomplishments,” said Jay Larson, Managing Director of AISI’s Construction Technical Program. “This expertise will greatly benefit AISI’s work in developing ‘green’ codes and standards for cold-formed steel design in the construction industry.”
Chen joined AISI in 1996 as a Senior Cold-Formed Steel Structural Engineer. A registered Professional Engineer in Ohio and Kentucky, Chen has more than 10 years of experience in the design of steel and reinforced concrete structures.
Before joining AISI, Chen worked for a structural consulting firm and a metal building manufacturer in Ohio. She earned a Bachelor of Science degree and a Master of Science degree in structural engineering from Zhejiang University in China, and a doctoral degree in structural engineering from the University of Kentucky.
Humble joined AISI in 1995 as a Regional Director of Construction Codes and Standards. He oversees AISI’s national model codes and standards activities with the International Code Council (ICC), National Fire Protection Association (NFPA), and the American Society of Heating, Refrigerating and Air-Conditioning Engineers (ASHRAE). He also oversees codes and standards activities in the Northeast region of the United States, as well as various code official chapters in that region.
Prior to joining AISI, Humble was a practicing architect with firms in Wisconsin and Connecticut. He has received national and regional awards for his architectural work, both through the firms for which he worked and as an individual. A licensed architect in two states, Humble has also received awards from the State of Connecticut, the Eastern States Building Officials Federation and ASHRAE. He is a graduate of the University of Wisconsin, with Bachelors and Masters degrees in architecture.
AISI’s codes and standards work is conducted under the Construction Market Council of the Steel Market Development Institute (SMDI), a business unit of AISI. The SMDI oversees the industry’s investment in advancing the case for steel in the marketplace as the preferred material of choice.
AISI serves as the voice of the North American steel industry in the public policy arena and plays a lead role in the development and application of new steels and steelmaking technology. AISI comprises 24 member companies, including integrated and electric furnace steelmakers, and 138 associate and affiliate members who are suppliers to or customers of the steel industry.
