Stainless Imports up 42% through YTD May 2011
08/29/2011 - Total stainless steel imports reached 335,588 tons through YTD May 2011, a 42.4% increase compared to YTD May 2010 according to the latest report from SSINA. Total specialty steel imports reached 427,616 tons through the same period, a 41.8% increase compared to YTD May 2010.
Total stainless steel imports reached 335,588 tons through YTD May 2011, a 42.4% increase compared to YTD May 2010 according to the latest report from the Specialty Steel Industry of North America (SSINA).
Total specialty steel imports (comprising stainless steel, alloy tool steel and electrical steel) reached 427,616 tons through the same period, a 41.8% increase compared to YTD May 2010.
Data included in the SSINA report reflect U.S. consumption, imports, and import penetration for YTD May 2011 compared to the same five-month period for 2010.
YTD May 2011 stainless steel sheet/strip imports were 173,382 tons, a 23.4% increase compared to YTD May 2010. U.S. consumption was 717,229 tons through the same period, a 33.6% increase, while five-month import penetration was 24.2%, a 2.0 percentage point decrease from 2010.
YTD May 2011 stainless steel plate imports were 68,808 tons, a 144.2% increase compared to YTD May 2010. U.S. consumption was 147,819 tons through the same period, a 47.9% increase, while five-month import penetration was 46.5%, an 18.3 percentage point increase from 2010.
YTD May 2011 stainless steel bar imports were 60,583 tons, a 53.5% increase compared to YTD May 2010. U.S. consumption was 114,034 tons through the same period, a 36.7% increase, while five-month import penetration was 53.1%, a 5.8 percentage point increase from 2010.
YTD May 2011 stainless steel rod imports were 12,881 tons, a 27.5% increase compared to YTD May 2010. U.S. consumption was 34,217 tons through the same period, a 33.6% increase, while five-month import penetration was 37.6%, a 1.9 percentage point decrease from 2010.
YTD May 2011 stainless steel wire imports were 19,934 tons, a 13.9% increase compared to YTD May 2010. U.S. consumption was 23,784 tons through the same period, a 4.3% increase, while five-month import penetration was 83.8%, a 7.1 percentage point increase from 2010.
Through YTD May 2011, imports of total stainless steel (comprising the foregoing product lines) were 335,588 tons, a 42.4% increase compared to YTD May 2010. U.S. consumption was 1,037,083 tons through the same period, a 34.9% increase, while five-month import penetration was 32.4%, a 1.7 percentage point increase from 2010.
YTD May 2011 alloy tool steel imports were 44,797 tons, a 60.8% increase compared to YTD May 2010. U.S. consumption and import penetration were not calculable.
YTD May 2011 electrical steel imports were 47,231 tons, a 24.2% increase compared to YTD May 2010. U.S. consumption was 64,494 tons through the same period, a 28.7% decrease from YTD May 2010, while five-month import penetration was 73.2%, a 31.1 percentage point increase from 2010.
Through YTD May 2011, imports of total specialty steel (comprising stainless steel, alloy tool steel and electrical steel) were 427,616 tons, a 41.8% increase compared to YTD May 2010. U.S. consumption was 1,126,973 tons through the same period, a 28.5% increase, while five-month import penetration was 37.9%, a 3.5 percentage point increase from 2010.
