Stainless Imports through February More than 50% Higher than YTD 2010
05/18/2011 - Total stainless imports reached 126,885 tons in YTD February 2011, a 51.4% increase compared to YTD February 2010 according to the latest report from SSINA. Total specialty imports (comprising stainless steel, alloy tool steel and electrical steel) over the same period were 166,205 tons, a 56.1% increase.
Total stainless imports reached 126,885 tons in YTD February 2011, a 51.4% increase compared to YTD February 2010 according to the latest report from the Specialty Steel Industry of North America (SSINA).
Total specialty imports (comprising stainless steel, alloy tool steel and electrical steel) over the same period were 166,205 tons, a 56.1% increase compared to YTD February 2010.
Data included in the SSINA report reflect U.S. consumption, imports, and import penetration for YTD February 2011 compared to the same 2010 two-month period.
YTD February 2011 stainless steel sheet/strip imports were 67,802 tons, a 32.3% increase compared to YTD February 2010. U.S. consumption was 269,429 tons through the same period, a 34.2% increase, while two-month import penetration was 25.2%, a 0.3 percentage point decrease from 2010.
YTD February 2011 stainless steel plate imports were 25,689 tons, a 151.2% increase compared to YTD February 2010. U.S. consumption was 55,470 tons through the same period, a 47.5% increase, while two-month import penetration was 46.3%, a 19.1 percentage point increase from 2010.
YTD February 2011 stainless steel bar imports were 21,221 tons, a 78.1% increase compared to YTD February 2010. U.S. consumption was 42,242 tons through the same period, a 53.1% increase, while two-month import penetration was 50.2%, a 7.0 percentage point increase from 2010.
YTD February 2011 stainless steel rod imports were 4,676 tons, a 24.3% increase compared to YTD February 2010. U.S. consumption was 12,791 tons through the same period, a 36.3% increase, while two-month import penetration was 36.6%, a 3.5 percentage point decrease from 2010.
YTD February 2011 stainless steel wire imports were 7,497 tons, a 12.2% increase compared to YTD February 2010. U.S. consumption was 9,293 tons through the same period, a 6.1% increase, while two-month import penetration was 80.7%, a 4.4 percentage point increase from 2010.
Through YTD February 2011, imports of total stainless steel (comprising the foregoing product lines) were 126,885 tons, a 51.4% increase compared to YTD February 2010. U.S. consumption was 389,225 tons through the same period, a 37.0% increase, while two-month import penetration was 32.6%, a 3.1 percentage point increase from 2010.
YTD February 2011 alloy tool steel imports were 18,742 tons, a 134.7% increase compared to YTD February 2010. U.S. consumption and import penetration were not calculable.
YTD February 2011 electrical steel imports were 20,578 tons, a 40.2% increase compared to YTD February 2010. U.S. consumption was 33,019 tons through the same period, a 3.0% increase from YTD February 2010, while two-month import penetration was 62.3%, a 16.5 percentage point increase from 2010.
Through YTD February 2011, imports of total specialty steel (comprising stainless steel, alloy tool steel and electrical steel) were 166,205 tons, a 56.1% increase compared to YTD February 2010. U.S. consumption was 434,712 tons through the same period, a 35.7% increase, while two-month import penetration was 38.2%, a 5.0 percentage point increase from 2010.
