Stainless, Specialty Imports Steady through August

Total stainless steel imports reached 543,757 tons through the first eight months of 2008, a 1.3% decrease compared to YTD August 2007, according to the latest report from the Specialty Steel Industry of North America (SSINA).
 
Total specialty imports (comprising stainless steel, alloy tool steel and electrical steel) reached 691,306 tons in the same period, a 0.4% decrease compared to YTD August 2007.
 
Data included in the SSIN report reflects U.S. consumption, imports, and import penetration for YTD August
2008 compared to YTD August 2007 for major specialty steel product lines, as well as for total stainless steel and total specialty steel.
 
Stainless steel sheet/strip YTD August 2008 imports were 337,871 tons, a 12.8% increase compared to YTD August 2007. U.S. consumption was 941,286 tons over the same period, an 8.8% decrease, while eight-month import penetration was 35.9%, a 6.9 percentage point increase from 2007.
 
Stainless steel plate YTD August 2008 imports were 68,569 tons, a 38.8% decrease compared to YTD August 2007. U.S. consumption was 174,121 tons over the same period, a 31.8% decrease, while eight-month import penetration was 39.4%, a 4.5 percentage point decrease from 2007.
 
Stainless steel bar YTD August 2008 imports were 85,962 tons, a 0.8% increase compared to YTD August 2007. U.S. consumption was 163,243 tons over the same period, a 3.0% increase, while eight-month import penetration was 52.7%, a 1.1 percentage point decrease from 2007.
 
Stainless steel rod YTD August 2008 imports were 21,271 tons, a 3.7% decrease compared to YTD August 2007. U.S. consumption was 43,368 tons over the same period, a 0.8% decrease, while eight-month import penetration was 49.0%, a 1.5 percentage point decrease from 2007.
 
Stainless steel wire YTD August 2008 imports were 30,084 tons, a 5.7% decrease compared to YTD August 2007. U.S. consumption was 51,147 tons over the same period,, a 5.5% decrease, while eight-month import  penetration was 58.8%, a 0.2 percentage point decrease from 2007.
 
Through YTD August 2008, total stainless steel imports (comprising the foregoing product lines) were 543,757 tons, a 1.3% decrease compared to YTD August 2007. U.S. consumption was 1,373,166 tons over the same period, an 11.1% decrease, while eight-month import penetration was 39.6%, a 3.9 percentage point increase from 2007.
 
Alloy tool steel YTD August 2008 imports were 68,770 tons, a 2.6% increase compared to YTD August 2007. U.S. consumption and import penetration were not calculable.
 
Electrical steel YTD August 2008 imports were 78,779 tons, a 3.2% increase compared to YTD August 2007. U.S. consumption was 234,682 tons over the same period, a 20.7% decrease from August 2007, while eight-month import penetration was 33.6%, a 7.8 percentage point increase from 2007.
 
Through YTD August 2008, total specialty steel imports (comprising stainless steel, alloy tool steel and electrical steel) were 691,306 tons, a 0.4% decrease compared to YTD August 2007. U.S. consumption was 1,663,444 tons over the same period, a 12.2% decrease, while eight-month import penetration was 41.6%, a 5.0 percentage point increase from 2007.
