Stainless, Specialty Imports Keep Pace with ’07 through February 2008

Total stainless steel imports reached 130,259 tons through the first two months of 2008, a 0.4% decrease compared to YTD February 2007, according to the latest report from the Specialty Steel Industry of North America (SSINA). Total specialty steel imports (comprising stainless steel, alloy tool steel, and electrical steel) were 168,218 tons for YTD February 2008, a 2.4% increase compared to YTD February 2007.
 
Data included in the report reflects U.S. consumption, imports, and import penetration for YTD February 2008 compared to the same 2007 two month period.
 
Stainless steel sheet/strip YTD February 2008 imports were 83,824 tons, a 14.3% increase compared to YTD February 2007. U.S. consumption was 351,045 tons in YTD February 2008, a 31.5% increase, while two month import penetration was 23.9%, a 3.6 percentage point decrease from 2007.
 
Stainless steel plate YTD February 2008imports were 15,846 tons, a 31.3% decrease compared to YTD February 2007. U.S. consumption was 44,294 tons in YTD February 2008, a 34.1% decrease, while two-month import penetration was 35.8%, a 1.5 percentage point increase from 2007.
 
Stainless steel bar YTD February 2008 imports in YTD February 2008 were 19,370 tons, an 8.8% decrease compared to YTD February 2007. U.S. consumption was 42,100 tons in YTD February 2008, a 2.4% decrease, while two-month import penetration was 46.0%, a 3.2 percentage point decrease from 2007.
 
Stainless steel rod YTD February 2008 imports were 4,480 tons, a 21.1% decrease compared to YTD February 2007. U.S. consumption was 10,189 tons in YTD February 2008, a 21.7% decrease, while two-month import penetration was 44.0%, a 0.3 percentage point increase from 2007.
 
Stainless steel wire YTD February 2008 imports were 6,738 tons, an 8.4% decrease compared to YTD February 2007. U.S. consumption was 8,777 tons in YTD February 2008, a 37.0% decrease, while two-month import penetration was 76.8%, a 24.0 percentage point increase from 2007.
 
Imports of total stainless steel (comprising the above product lines) in YTD February 2008 were 130,259 tons, a 0.4% decrease compared to YTD February 2007. U.S. consumption was 456,405 tons over the same period, a 12.9% increase, while two-month import penetration was 28.5%, a 3.8 percentage point decrease from 2007.
 
Alloy tool steel YTD February 2008 imports were 19,354 tons, a 22.7% increase compared to YTD February 2007. U.S. consumption and import penetration were not calculable.
 
Electrical steel YTD February 2008 imports were 18,606 tons, a 4.9% increase compared to YTD February 2007. U.S. consumption was 58,980 tons, a 17.7% decrease from February 2007, while two-month import penetration was 31.5%, a 6.8 percentage point increase from 2007.
 
Imports of total specialty steel (comprising stainless steel, alloy tool steel, and electrical steel) in YTD February 2008 were 168,218 tons, a 2.4% increase compared to YTD February 2007. U.S. consumption was 532,134 tons in YTD February 2008, an 8.9% increase, while two-month import penetration was 31.6%, a 2.0 percentage point decrease from 2007.
