SMS Demag to Upgrade Steel Dynamics Bloom Caster
04/07/2008 - Steel Dynamics contracts SMS Demag to upgrade the bloom caster at the Pittsboro, Ind., facility for the production of larger section sizes.
Steel Dynamics has contracted SMS Demag to upgrade the bloom caster at the company’s Pittsboro, Ind., facility for the production of larger section sizes. Steel Dynamics’ Engineered Bar Products Division is headquartered at the Pittsboro facility.
SMS Demag’s scope of supply for the upgrade includes the provision of new X-Cast® mold assemblies including coppers, segment zeros, new soft-reduction units, withdrawal and run-out guides, dummy bar equipment, and maintenance stands. SMS Demag will also supply various components that will enable Steel Dynamics to convert their existing equipment to the modified designs.
SMS group is, under the holding SMS GmbH, a group of companies internationally active in plant construction and mechanical engineering for the steel and nonferrous metals industry. It consists of the two Business Areas SMS Demag and SMS Meer, which jointly form SMS metallurgy. In 2006, some 9000 employees worldwide generated a turnover of about EUR 2.8 billion.
