Siemens to Supply Static Var Compensation for Qatar Steel’s New EAF Plant

Qatar Steel Company has placed an order with Siemens for an SVC Plus static Var compensator for its new electric steel plant in Mesaieed.

The compensation plant’s purpose is to maintain the grid power quality, and so ensure compliance with the power supplier's specifications by preventing line harmonic distortions that normally occur during melting operations. The value of the order lies in the single-digit million euro range.

Siemens is already to supply major parts of the steel works, having received the earlier order in the summer of 2010. As part of its scope of supply, Siemens will construct a 110-tonne electric arc furnace, 110-tonne ladle furnace, five-strand continuous billet caster, and associated auxiliary equipment for the new electric steel facility, which will be located in Mesaieed Industrial City.

The plant’s power electronics will be based on IGBT (insulated gate bipolar transistor) modules, with filter circuits specifically designed for electric arc furnace operation. Siemens has developed a state-of-the-art digital controller for monitoring and control purposes. A networked SCADA (Supervisory Control and Data Acquisition) system will facilitate remote monitoring and visualization, not only of the static Var compensator and the infeed switchgear but also of the operating state of the electric arc furnace.

Siemens had earlier installed a static Var compensation plant at Qatar Steel in the 1990s, which has now been maintaining the network quality required to operate the existing electric arc furnace for more than ten years.

Qatar Steel is building the new electric steel plant to meet increasing demand for structural steels in the Gulf Region. It is scheduled to come into production in the middle of 2012.

Qatar Steel Company, one of the leading steelmakers in the Gulf Region, has been running a steel works in Mesaieed Industrial City since 1974.
