Siemens-Led Consortium to Supply New Sinter Plant for NMDC

National Mineral Development Corporation Limited (NMDC), an Indian government-owned mining company headquartered in Hyderabad, has placed an order with a consortium headed by Siemens VAI Metals Technologies for the supply of a sinter plant on a full turn-key basis.

The new sinter plant will be part of a new steelworks that NMDC plans to build in Nagarnar in the Indian state of Chhattisgarh. With a suction area of 460 m2, the new sinter strand will be capable of producing 4.75 million tonnes of high-quality sinter per year.

Siemens VAI’s scope of supply for the sinter plant project includes basic and detail engineering for the entire sinter plant; complete equipment supply comprising raw material preparation and material handling, the sinter machine, sinter cooler and offgas-treatment facilities; the electrical, media-supply and automation systems; and spare parts. Advisory services for erection, installation, start-up and commissioning also will be provided, in addition to personnel training.

A highlight of the project includes the installation of Siemens VAI’s Intensive Mixing and Granulation System (IMGS) for the preparation of the sinter raw mix. This solution will enable the plant to achieve a thoroughly homogeneous sinter raw mix, which is an important factor for the production of high-quality sinter for the blast furnace. The IMGS system will also enable the plant to use a much higher portion of lower-cost, ultra-fine iron ores in the sinter mix, thus decreasing the specific costs for the production of sinter.

Siemens VAI will design the sinter plant, downstream equipment and environmental facilities to allow for a future capacity increase.

The new sinter plant will be a part of the 3 million tonnes/year integrated iron- and steelworks NMDC will build at Naganar in support of a national campaign to increase steel output in India. The sinter plant will be supplied by a consortium comprising Siemens VAI Metals Technologies GmbH, Linz, Austria; and the Indian companies Siemens VAI Metals Technologies Private Limited and Nagarjuna Construction Company Ltd. The order volume for the consortium is approximately 120 million euros.

The new sinter plant is scheduled to be started up in late 2013.

State-owned NMDC is India's largest iron ore producer and exporter. The company currently mines more than 25 million tonnes of iron ore per year at a number of sites throughout India. The new steel plant will be built in the vicinity of the company’s iron ore deposit Bailadila Deposit-11/C.
