Ruukki to Make Major Bridge Delivery in Sweden
03/30/2011 - Ruukki has been contracted to deliver and install steel structures for two bridges at Rotebro, between Stockholm and Arlanda in Sweden.
Ruukki has been contracted to deliver and install steel structures for two bridges at Rotebro on the E4 highway between Stockholm and Arlanda in Sweden.
Ruukki's delivery includes both the load-bearing steel structures and the piles used in the foundations. The customer is NCC Construction Sverige AB and the contract is worth about EUR 6 million.
Ruukki worked on designing the bridges with the lead contractor and designer from the very outset. A high degree of prefabrication and joint planning will speed up construction, reduce environmental impacts, and cause minimum disruption to road traffic during construction. Two new composite girder bridges will replace the concrete bridges currently in use.
In addition to the load-bearing steel structures, Ruukki's bridge delivery includes the RD piles, with threaded sleeves, that will be used for the bridge foundations. The piles will be installed by drilling. These piles will be used for the first time to this extent for bridge foundations in Sweden. Use of threaded sleeves saves total costs because it considerably shortens installation time and reduces on-site welding.
"Since the aim is to construct a customized solution in challenging conditions, partnership between the parties involved in the project is very important," explained Sören Backlund at NCC Construction. “Ruukki is a reliable, committed partner in exactly such types of demanding project as the one at Rotebro, where there is a need to minimize disruption to traffic.”
"In this project, too, open cooperation between Ruukki and the main contractor enabled a cost-competitive solution to be found. The solution has used Ruukki's extensive expertise in steel pile foundations and steel superstructure," says SVP Petri Nieminen at Ruukki.
Ruukki's deliveries to Rotebro will begin this spring and are scheduled for completion during 2013. Steel components for the bridge will be made at Ruukki's works in Ylivieska and the piles will be made at the Pulkkila Works in Finland. The new bridges will open to traffic in 2014.
