Rautaruukki to Supply Steel Structures for Helsinki Bridge

Rautaruukki has been selected to supply the steel structures for a new bridge that will link the headland of Jätkäsaari to Ruoholahti in Helsinki, Finland. The order is valued at about EUR 3 million.

The 143-meter long, 25-meter wide cable-stayed bridge—referred to as the Crusell Bridge—will span the bay separating Jätkäsaari and Ruoholahti. The bridge support pylons will rise to 49 meters above sea level, and its center is earmarked for tram traffic. When completed, the bridge will have lanes in each direction and two lanes for light traffic. The bridge won an international design competition held by the City of Helsinki in winter 2001-02.

Ruukki will deliver the piles, as well as all the steel structures, including installation, to Skanska Infra Oy. "We chose Ruukki to deliver the steel structures because it is a reliable supplier and its bid provided best value for money," commented Project Manager Pentti Ovalo from Skanska Infra.

Ruukki's deliveries will begin in January 2009 and be completed by the end of the year. The Crusell Bridge will open to traffic in July 2010. The piles for the bridge are being made in Finland at Ruukki's Oulainen and Pulkkila works and the steel structures at the Ylivieska works.

The bridge has been commissioned by the City of Helsinki Public Works Department. Jätkäsaari is part of the former West Harbour in Helsinki, where a start can be made on housing construction now that cargo operations have been relocated to the new Vuosaari Harbour in east Helsinki. There are plans to develop Jätkäsaari into a new maritime urban district with as many as eight to nine thousand new dwellings in the centre of Helsinki. The development of Jätkäsaari is expected to take about 15 years.

Rautaruukki supplies metal-based components, systems and integrated systems to the construction and engineering industries, including a wide selection of metal products and services. Rautaruukki has operations in 26 countries, employs 14,300 people, and reported net sales of EUR 3.9 billion in 2008. The corporation uses the marketing name Ruukki.
