Obituary: Edwin J. Muccillo

The son of Vincenzo and Gina (Santangelo) Muccillo, Edwin was born on Jan. 18, 1931, in Smokey Hollow, a neighborhood in the east side of Youngstown, Ohio.

Edwin was a 1949 graduate of South High School and a 1953 graduate of Youngstown State University, where he earned a bachelor’s degree in electrical engineering. After graduating, he went to work at Youngstown Sheet and Tube Co.’s seamless tube mills as a management trainee.

He worked his way up the ranks at the company’s Campbell works, becoming a foreman and a general foreman of the hot mills before being named as assistant superintendent of both the hot and finishing sections. In 1975, he was named the superintendent of the Campbell work’s seamless mills.

Ed was with the company during “Black Monday,” Sept. 19, 1977. On that date, the company announced it was shuttering the Campbell works and laying off more than 4,000 people. The action heralded the beginning of the end of the region’s steel industry.

Ed was retained but it was an extremely stressful time. He later went to work for Jones & Laughlin Steel and was there through its merger with Republic Steel under LTV.

He remained with LTV for the remainder of his career, serving as an assets manager in his last five years. In that role, he helped oversee the dismantling and reclamation of the Campbell works.

Ed was a Life Member of the Association for Iron & Steel Technology, having joined a predecessor organization, the Association of Iron and Steel Engineers, in 1956. He served on the organization’s board of directors in 1977. He also served as a district director.

He loved golf and playing Mill Creek Golf Course in Youngstown, Ohio. He played until his eye sight was impaired in 1995.

Ed also loved math and anything related to it. He also loved to travel and would spend winters in Florida and Arizona after he retired.  He was a member of Our Lady of Mount Carmel Basilica his entire life.

He is survived by his loving wife of 50 years, the former Rosemary Capuzello, to whom he was married on Jan. 9, 1965; three children: Gina (Tim) Dixon of Salem, Ohio, Lisa (William) Dallas of Medina, Ohio, and Ed (Gretchen) Muccillo of Gilbert, Ariz.; four grandchildren: Michael, Scott and Katie Dallas and Alyssa Muccillo; and a sister, Betty Webb, of Akron, Ohio.  He will be greatly missed by all.

A Mass of Christian Burial was celebrated Monday, Nov. 16, 2015, at Our Lady of Mount Carmel Basilica, Youngstown, with the Very Rev. Msgr. Michael J. Cariglio Jr. as celebrant. A prayer service at Rossi & Santucci Funeral Home, Boardman, Ohio, preceded the service. Burial took place at Calvary Cemetery, Youngstown, Ohio.
