Nucor Completes Acquisition of Galamba Metals Group, MRS
04/03/2008 - Nucor’s wholly owned subsidiary, The David J. Joseph Co., completes the acquisition of Kansas City, Mo., based Galamba Metals Group, and Monroe, N.C., based Metal Recycling Services Inc.
Nucor Corp.’s new wholly owned subsidiary, The David J. Joseph Company ("DJJ"), has completed the acquisition of the assets of Kansas City, Missouri-based Galamba Metals Group.
Galamba, founded in 1977, operates a total of 16 full-service scrap processing facilities (including two automobile shredders) in Kansas, Missouri, and Arkansas, processing over 500,000 tons annually. DJJ will operate the Galamba Metals Group facilities under the name Advantage Metals Recycling, LLC. Galamba’s 385 current employees and management team will remain with Advantage Metals Recycling.
Nucor also announced completion of its acquisition of Monroe, N.C., based Metal Recycling Services Inc. (MRS). Operating a full-service processing facility with automobile shredder as well as two North Carolina feeder yards, MRS employs 150 people and processes 220,000 tons annually.
Nucor said that both acquisitions are part of its previously announced plan to utilize DJJ as a platform for continued growth in the scrap processing industry.
Nucor and affiliates manufacture steel products, with operating facilities primarily in the U.S. and Canada. Products produced include carbon and alloy steel bars, beams, sheet and plate; steel joists and joist girders; steel deck; fabricated concrete reinforcing steel; cold finished steel; steel fasteners; metal building systems; light gauge steel framing; steel grating and expanded metal; and wire and wire mesh. Nucor, through DJJ, also brokers ferrous and nonferrous metals, pig iron and HRI/DRI; supplies ferro-alloys; and processes ferrous and nonferrous scrap. Nucor, North America's largest recycler, also is the largest purchaser of ferrous scrap in North America, with total scrap purchases of 22.8 million tons in 2007.
