Morris Material Handling to Supply P&H Hot Metal Cranes for Tamco

Tamco Steel, Calif., has awarded a contract to Morris Material Handling for two 200-ton P&H(R) overhead cranes for hot metal charge and ladle service. The new cranes will replace two aging cranes and will enable Tamco to increase steel production output through reduced downtime and faster speeds.

Morris Material Handling has supported the steel industry rebound during the past year, providing hot metal cranes and modernizations at the following facilities:

Nucor Steel, Decatur, Ala. — Capacity upgrades on two meltshop cranes in March 2005. The CMAA Class E, 80-foot span cranes were increased from 240 to 270-ton capacities. The furnace can now be charged in a single pass.

Charter Steel, Cleveland, Ohio — Four new cranes will be provided for Charter’s Cleveland meltshop before the end of the year. The order includes two 200-ton capacity, CMAA Class F hot metal ladle and charge cranes; a 30-ton capacity billet handling crane; and a 15-ton capacity caster service crane. All will use P&H Static Stepless controls, which will be enclosed in an insulated and air-conditioned control house.

Nucor Steel, Crawfordsville, Ind. — A new CMAA Class F, hot metal ladle crane will be delivered in October 2005. This massive 260/150/25-ton capacity P&H crane has a 75-foot span and will sit over eight stories above the floor. It is the largest AC ladle crane operated by adjustable frequency control in the U.S.

The severe-duty CMAA Class F cranes are being designed with 80-foot spans and 74-foot lifts. The cranes will be operated manually from an enclosed, insulated and air conditioned operator's cab or by remote radio control. Each crane will have three hoists — a 200-ton main hoist for the hot metal ladle, a 60-ton auxiliary hoist for pouring, and a 25-ton maintenance hoist. The main hoist and 60-ton auxiliary hoist will be provided with DC variable voltage control. The 25-ton auxiliary hoist, bridge and trolley motions will be provided with P&H Smartorque(R) AC adjustable frequency controls. All controls will be mounted in an air conditioned, walk-in control house.

Morris Material Handling’s turnkey scope of supply includes removal and disposal of the existing cranes, installation of the new cranes, and an operator and maintenance training package provided by the P&H Institute. Manufacturing and engineering will be completed at Morris' facilities in Wisconsin and Ohio, with field installation by Morris' national installation crew. Shipment is scheduled for July 2006.
