Lifelong steel mill manufacturer Paul S. Morgan died Sunday, 23 September 2012, his family reported, at the age of 88.
From 1965 to 1986, Paul Morgan served as president of Morgan Construction Company, the rolling mill equipment engineer and manufacturer, headquartered in Worcester, Mass., and continued as Chairman until his retirement in 2004. He was the fourth generation of Morgans to lead the company founded in 1888 by his great-grandfather, Charles Hill Morgan.
During his tenure as President, Paul oversaw the introduction of two significant technical developments for the production of high speed steel rods -- the No-Twist Mill and the Stelmor cooling process. The No-Twist finishing mill was developed by Morgan engineers between 1960 and 1963 and tested at the American Steel & Wire operations of U.S. Steel, while the Stelmor process represented the joint efforts of Morgan and Steel Company of Canada (Stelco) announced in 1962. Both innovations were first installed together for Stelco in 1966. In recognition of these major contributions to the steelmaking process, Paul Morgan received the Tadeusz Sendzimir Memorial Medal from the Association of Iron and Steel Engineers in 2002.
Morgan Construction Company also entered into a number of mergers, acquisitions and licensing agreements with companies in the U.S. as well as England, Japan, Italy, Germany, Switzerland and China under Paul’s leadership, that opened new markets and expanded existing product lines, such as universal joint spindles, non-ferrous tube drawing and continuous rolling, cutting and coiling of non-ferrous rods.
The company’s first overseas subsidiary, Morgan do Brasil, opened in São Paulo in 1981. Paul Morgan laid the foundation for the U.S. company’s transition from global market participant to a truly global organization.
After 120 years as a world leader in rolling mill technology, Morgan Construction Company was acquired in April 2008 by Siemens AG. Its Worcester operations continue today as part of the Siemens VAI Metals Technologies business.
