May Steel Shipments Down 52.5% from May 2008
07/17/2009 - U.S. steel mills shipped 4,282,000 net tons in May, a 52.5% decrease from May 2008 according to the latest report from AISI.
U.S. steel mills shipped 4,282,000 net tons in May, according to the latest report from the American Iron and Steel Institute (AISI).
The report indicates the total represents a 52.5% decrease from the 9,008,000 net tons shipped in May 2008 and a 5.9% increase from the 4,042,000 net tons shipped in the previous month, April 2009.
A year-to-year comparison of year-to-date shipments shows the following changes within major market classifications:
- Service centers and distributors, - 55.9%
- Automotive, - 56.2%
- Construction and contractors’ products, -53.3%
- Oil and gas, - 60.7%
